The Malawi Gaming Board was established to regulate gaming; control and license gaming premises; to impose and collect tax on gaming; and further to provide for matters connected with or incidental to the foregoing. (Gaming Act No. 26, 1996)
MALAWI Gaming Board and Lotteries Authority (MAGLA) was established to ensure that the country has a dynamic, vibrant and well regulated gaming and lottery industry that shall contribute towards the socio-economic development of the country.

MAGLA is a merger between the Malawi Gaming Board (MGB) and the National Lotteries Board (NLB). The merger was necessitated by the Government because of the similarities of the gaming and lottery industries.

Activities of MAGLA
  • Issuing gaming and lottery licences
  • Carrying out inspections of gaming machines and games to ensure fair play
  • Monitoring lottery draws to ensure fairness
  • To ensure that winnings are paid as specified
  • To ensure that all winnings are paid without delay
Financing of MAGLA operations
MAGLA charges fees for its services to finance its activities. Part of the revenue is used for other activities such as:
  • Promotion of Tourism
  • Development projects (Corporate Social Responsibility
  • Payment of dividend to the Government
Promotion of tourism

Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture is the line ministry of MAGLA. MAGLA helps the ministry in tourism promotion by contributing towards infrastructure development and other facilities such as:
  • Proposed building of restaurant at the Lilongwe Botanic Garden
  • Financial contribution towards Lake Malawi International Yachting Marathon event
  • Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture electronic advertising bill boards
  • Refurbishment of Memorial Tower at Providence Industrial Mission in Chiradzulu
  • Installation of Ministry of Tourism, Wildlife and Culture information desks at Kamuzu International Airport and Chileka International Airport
Transaction with the shareholder-government
MAGLA pays dividend from its surplus annually to the Government as its shareholder.

MAGLA is working alongside other Parastatals to contribute towards the socio-economic development of the country.
